From the desk of the President of SD-LBDGA
The 2018 legislative session is in full swing with the kickoff hog roast in January having an incredible turn out with approximately 86 of 105 legislatures for an evening of food, beverages and conversation. The evening gave us the chance to communicate face to face about our concerns, as well as listen to their ideas, and provide them a plethora of statistics and information of how valuable our industries are to the state of South Dakota.
We also had an opportunity to visit about many of the upcoming bills that may affect our industries. This legislative session will be a busy schedule with several bills already having been discussed and assigned to their committees. Now is the time to get fired up! Get your communities and associates involved as some of these bills are positive for our industries such as; Bill HB1132 to revise the minimum age requirement of consumption of alcoholic beverages by active members of the military. Yet there are others proposed that would have negative impact on our industries such as the one that proposes to increase tax per drink by a substantial amount. This bill has already been assigned to a committee. Another proposed bill is to repeal video lottery entirely; though it has not yet been assigned a committee.
Needless to say, there is a lot of work to be done. This requires numerous active volunteers, SD-LBDGA members, and recruitment of new members to be proactive. We as a whole need you to do your part and communicate with your representatives from your districts. Only this strength in numbers will make a difference in and protect the viability of the SD Liquor and Beverage and Gaming Industries. If you are uncertain on how to become more involved or want more information, feel free to reach out to any of us.
